In efforts to diversify access to the ocean and in celebration of Latino Conservation Week, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Coastal Program the "New Wave of Surfistas" event will provide a FREE group surf lesson and yoga on Monday, August 14th. Although registration for the surf lesson has closed, we encourage you to join for oceanside yoga (5-6 PM) and good company – RSVP is required to ensure we have enough food for everyone, and bus transportation (optional) is included. We hope to create a welcoming space and reduce the obstacles for people of different backgrounds to enjoy the ocean.

In this event, youth from the UConn Natural Resources Conservation Academy learn how drones can me used for natural resource management!

Join us for a day at the Angeles National Forest to learn about the importance of native plants and their effects on the longevity of the ecosystems. Participants will be able to create seed bombs that can be planted in their homes to have a native garden and will learn the importance of composting and its effects on wildlife. This free event will allow locals to learn of ways to become involved in maintaining ecosystems in and out of the forest.

Join us to talk about environmental justice in San Bernardino and what we can do as a community. 

Join us as we learn about monarch butterflies, milkweed plants, and conservation from our special guests, the Western Monarch Advocates! After, we will make a DIY greenhouse with milkweed seeds for you to take home to start your own pollinator garden. Meet at the campground amphitheater.

Many times, underrepresented enviro and conservationist work are the only ones in the room, and tend to work in silos.  The goal of this event is to get us all together, in a social setting, so we can create synergetic momentum towards the engagement of public lands and waters.  Many times we meet in larger settings and our voices are drowned out; this is an opportunity to meet up and make a plan to work collectively for the purposes of making our community better and collaborating with the goal of uplifting us all. Come hang out and enjoy an amazing DJ spinning CumbiaHouse music, have a cold drink from a Latina owned local brewery, munch on some amazing tacos and visualize our collective future with like minded individuals.   Big shout out to our friends and supporters!

As part of Latino Conservation Week we are doing a litter pick up around Long Branch Parks this Saturday July 22 from 10-12pm. Please join us and help our “Don’t Pollute” youth high school students fill out a community survey on litter and plastic bags.  Registration ahead of time is preferred. outlier.mp3 is the artist moniker of Alejandro Valdés, a 24 y/o Bolivian + Chilean American multidisciplinary artist and academic. He has performed in the USA, Costa Rica, Bolivia, and Panama. What's DC Bike Party?

DC Bike Party is a monthly party organized entirely by volunteers. During the summer months, there's an average of 1500 riders. This is the 11th birthday of DC Bike Party, and this month's theme is a Jungle Circus. The DC Bike Party team is also celebrating the life of Dzhoy Zuckerman, a wonderful volunteer with DCBP who passed away a week ago. The centerpiece will be a film screening of the documentary, “The Letter”, which tells the story of frontline leaders traveling to Rome to discuss the encyclical letter Laudato Si’ with Pope Francis. This film was carefully selected by C3 and our project partners to drive engagement and stimulate thoughtful conversations around justice issues associated with the ongoing climate crisis. 

Following the screening, we will facilitate a dynamic panel discussion featuring trusted experts to delve into the themes and challenges presented in the film. The panel discussion will incorporate an interactive question-and-answer session, allowing the audience to actively engage in the conversation.

Join SUWA for a morning of service in our public lands! We will be picking up trash while hiking and learning a bit about Stansbury Island.

In the morning we will be removing blackberry from a previously replanted area in southern Clark's Meadow. We will work for approximately one hour and then we will embark on an urban forest guided nature walk with Ed Dominguez, Lead Naturalist, at the Seward Park Audubon Society. Join our trek through the fields and forest at Seward Park as we tune in to migrating and resident birds and bring them into view as the opportunity allows. Lead mushroom enthusiast Daniel Lopez will demonstrate how to grow your own mushrooms. Paint a bird house, play some games, and check out our table of community resources. Enjoy free tacos and music with our community!

The Sea Slug Scavenger Hunt is a hands-on learning program at the tidepools of southern California. In 2023, we will be hosting the program at Cabrillo Beach in Los Angeles County. Our multilingual team will teach participants about sea slugs and other marine organisms, followed by time to explore the tidepools. Our programs will be hosted in English, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese.

Niki Lopez Afro-Latina, Lesbian interdisciplinary visual artist, curator, social practitioner and award-winning designer. Known for her vibrant color palette, avant-garde exhibitions, masks, and a collection of works dealing with traumas and healing through the arts inspiring the creation of the transformative arts movement "What’s Your Elephant®" - which uses the arts to address the unspoken. 

Lopez's recent mixed-media reliefs incorporate masks and mask elements exemplifying components of her meditative journey towards Afrocentric spirituality, self-discovery, reflection, healing, restoration, and social justice. Exploring various media, intuitive mark-making, and free-flowing strokes, her work evokes a sense of movement, and energy. 

Lopez's contributions to the arts were recognized with a 2021 Kennedy Center Citizen Artist Fellow nomination and the 2020 Broward County’s Arts & Culture Visionaries Award by ArtServe. Her philanthropic actions include donating works to support various causes such as the World AIDS Museum and Educational Center, HRC-Human Rights Campaign, and Equality Florida.

Natalia works as a visual artist and holistic practitioner. In 2017 she created Heart in Brain Studios as a nurturing space to explore internal landscapes through the visual arts and energy-based practices. Juan Guillermo Sánchez Martínez was born in Bakatá/Bogotá, in the Colombian Andes. He coordinates the online multilingual anthology and exhibition Siwar Mayu, A River of Hummingbirds. He has published the following books of poetry: Uranio (2023), Bejuco (2021), Salvia (2014), Río (2010), and Altamar, awarded with the National Prize in Colombia in 2016 (University of Antioquia). In 2019, he co-edited the volume Muyurina y el presente profundo with quechua writer Fredy Roncalla (Pakarina/Hawansuyo), and he is currently co-editing Abiayalan Pluriverses. Bridging Indigenous Studies and Hispanic Studies with Gloria E. Chacón and Lauren Beck (Amherst College, 2023). He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Indigenous Learning at Lakehead University (Thunder Bay, Canada).

Daniel Correa immigrated to the United States from Colombia when he was a kid with his family. He grew up in New Jersey for the majority of his life. Ever since he was a kid, Daniel has always been fascinated by the natural world and the outdoors; in part thanks to his parents taking him to the local urban parks and family camping trips. His curiosity and interest in nature led him to a B.A. in Environmental Science with a minor in Latin American and Caribbean Studies. Daniel has used his college degree, and his passion for the environment to pursue a career in wetland habitat restoration and environmental education. He has worked on various restoration and conservation projects in the East and West Coast with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Americorps, and most recently with the Contra Costa Resource Conservation District.

Natalia works as a visual artist and holistic practitioner. Metztli López Torres was born in the city of Xalapa, Veracruz on May 7, 1984. Metztli completed a degree in Social Anthropology at the Universidad Veracruzana and a Master's in Social Anthropology by CIESAS-Gulf. During this time Metztli studied subjects related to pregnancy, women's health, gender violence, and feminism. She focused her attention on studying with traditional midwives from the Xalapa-Coatepec area and rescuing traditional knowledge regarding women's health care. During this time she trained as a birth doula and educator in preparation for childbirth.

In the spring of 2012 Metztli founded her business called Luna Mamá focused on providing education around pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum from a natural perspective, as well as educating mothers on issues related to attachment parenting. In 2014 Metztli moved to the United States with her family and by 2019 she restarted her business, now called Luna Mama Services, Inc. where she has dedicated herself to bringing knowledge of Traditional Mexican Medicine and Traditional Midwifery to Chicana women, migrants, and the community in general.

Metztli currently continues her business as a birth attendant, educator in lactation, specialist in traditional Mexican postpartum, sobadora, and uterus healer.

Natalia works as a visual artist and holistic practitioner. En el 2014 Metztli se mudó a los Estados Unidos con su familia y para el 2019 reinició su negocio ahora llamado Luna Mama Services, Inc. en donde se ha dedicado a acercar el conocimiento de la Medicina Tradicional Mexicana y la Partería Tradicional a las mujeres chicanas, migrantes, así como a la comunidad en general.

With 35 years of experience in cultural resource management and over a decade working on the marine sanctuary campaign, her expertise guides NCTC’s multifaceted work in California and beyond. She has traveled the world sharing her expertise on collaborative management, social justice and equity. Her leadership is backed by an understanding of what it means to take care of our place, be good stewards, and foster community. Chair Walker’s connection to the ocean remains at the heart of all she does – her compass is set to the sea.

We will meet up at the City of Tucson Ward 1 Council Office starting at 7:45am.  We will head out by 8:15 and make our first stop at the Santa Cruz River Heritage Project the https://www.tucsonaz.gov/Departments/Water/Water-Projects-Programs/Water-Arts-and-Culture/The-Santa-Cruz-River-Heritage-Project, then we are off to the SweetWater Wetlands, and finally back to the Ward 1 Office. We will have plenty of ice water on hand and support from FUGA and other teams.

Join Zion National Park on July 22nd, 2023, for their very first Latino Conservation Week event!  

Zion National Park is excited to invite you and your family to celebrate Latino Conservation Week with us for the first time. We will be offering a morning guided hike and traditional cultural activities in the afternoon. Our goal of these events is to embrace and enjoy nature while acknowledging the significance of Latinos in conservation and recreation.  

Schedule:

9am – Meet at the South Campground Ampitheater in Zion National Park 

Bring your own coffee and have cafecito with rangers and interns, prepare for the hike, and hear our welcome to Zion’s Latino Conservation Week. 

9:30am - Hike begins on the Pa’rus trail, leaving from South Campground Amphitheater

The hike will be approximately 2 miles long and will take around 1.5 hrs. The Pa’rus trail is a flat, paved walk next to the virgin river. It is wheelchair accessible, bike and dog friendly, and considered an easy hike. It will be hot, and there will not be much shade cover. Please, plan accordingly and wear comfortable shoes, cool clothes, a hat, and sunscreen. 

LUNCH – After the hike, there will be a break for lunch. Participants can bring their own lunch and are welcome to eat on the lawn at the nature center or explore the rest of the park. Food concessions are offered at the Zion Lodge, or in Springdale.  

1pm-4pm – Activities at the Nature Center  

Activity tables by our Latino Heritage Internship Program and Greening Youth interns. Come enjoy activities for the whole family and learn about the cultural research our interns are doing. Participants can expect loteria, mural, and mapping activities that will be set out on the lawn next to the Nature Center.  

Information:

Locations: The South Campground Amphitheater is accessible from the Nature Center Parking Lot, which is the second turn to the right after entering the park from the south entrance, or from walking up the Pa'rus trail from the Visitor Center. 

The Nature Center is located in-between the Museum (shuttle stop 2) and the Visitor Center (shuttle stop 1), and is right next to the South Campground. It is accessible from the Nature Center parking lot, which is the second right turn after entering from the South Entrance or walking up the Pa'rus trail from the visitor center about 10 minutes. 

Parking: There is usually parking spaces at the Nature Center parking lot before 9am. It is highly recommended to enter the park before 9am to find the best parking and to avoid traffic to enter the park. Other parking options in the park include the Visitor Center parking lot and pull outs along the road (if all four tires are on pavement and the car is not in the street). If parking in the park is full, there is parking in the town of Springdale, visitors can use the Springdale shuttle to get to the park entrance.  

What to Bring: Plenty of water, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, cool clothing, food or snacks, and the whole family!

¡Únase al Parque Nacional Zion el 22 de julio de 2023 para su primer evento de la Semana de la Conservación Latina!

El Parque Nacional Zion se complace en invitarlo a usted y a su familia a celebrar la Semana de la Conservación Latina. Estaremos ofreciendo una caminata guiada por la mañana y actividades culturales tradicionales por la tarde. Nuestro objetivo de estos eventos es disfrutar la naturaleza mientras reconocemos la importancia de los latinos en la conservación y la recreación.

Programa

9am: encuentro en el South Campground Amphitheater en el Parque Nacional Zion

Traiga su propio café y tome un cafecito con park rangers y interns, prepárese para la caminata y escuche nuestra bienvenida a la Semana de la Conservación Latina de Zion.

9:30 am: comienza la caminata en el sendero Pa'rus, que sale de South Campground Amphitheater

La caminata será de aproximadamente 2 millas de largo y tomará alrededor de 1,5 horas. El sendero Pa'rus es un paseo llano y pavimentado junto al río virgen. Es accesible para silla de ruedas, apto para bicicletas y perros, y se considera una caminata fácil. Hará calor y no habrá mucha sombra. Por favor, planifique y use zapatos cómodos, ropa fresca, sombrero y protector solar.

ALMUERZO – Después de la caminata, habrá un descanso para almorzar. Los participantes pueden traer su propio almuerzo y pueden comer en el césped del Nature Center o explorar el resto del parque. Se puede encontra concesiones de alimentos en el Zion Lodge o en Springdale.

1:00pm-4:00pm – Actividades en el Nature Center

Mesas de actividades a cargo de nuestros interns del Programa de Latino Heritage Internship Progam y Greening Youth Foundation. Ven a disfrutar de actividades para toda la familia y conoce la investigación cultural que están realizando nuestros interns. Los participantes pueden esperar actividades de lotería, mural y mapeo que se establecerán en el césped junto al Nature Center.

Informacion 

Estacionamiento: Por lo general, hay espacios de estacionamiento en el estacionamiento del Nature Center antes de las 9 a.m. Se recomienda ingresar al parque antes de las 9 a.m. para encontrar el mejor estacionamiento y evitar el tráfico para ingresar al parque. Otras opciones de estacionamiento en el parque incluyen el estacionamiento del Centro de visitantes y las salidas a lo largo de la carretera (si las cuatro llantas están sobre el pavimento y el automóvil no está en la calle). Watch sea otters, harbor seals, sea lions, and bird species as we explore one of California's most spectacular wetlands aboard a stable, 27-foot US Coast Guard inspected pontoon boat. 

“La gallina y la tortilla de maíz” with Teatro La Bolsa  

Turuleca hen is looking for help cooking corn tortillas. Will the farm animals help her? Teatro La Bolsa, a local Latin-American theatre company, will present a bilingual play for children that highlights the value of friendship, solidarity, and sharing. Families are invited to participate in this fun, interactive performance in front of Peirce Mill, where people still grind corn today!

After the play, families are invited to tour the mill, try grinding corn by hand, or use cornmeal play dough to make their own pretend tortillas!

Join Travis County Balcones Canyonlands Preserve (BCP) in celebrating the 10^th anniversary of Latino Conservation Week (July 15 – 23) on Saturday, July 22nd from 8:30 – 11am to remove invasive plants. Latino Conservation Week: Disfrutando y Conservando Nuestra Tierra is an initiative of Hispanic Access Foundation and is a way to support the Latino community getting into the outdoors and participating in activities to protect our natural resources.

The Balcones Canyonlands Preserve (BCP) is one of the nation’s largest urban preserves, covering more than 33,000 acres in Central Texas. It protects habitat for endangered and species of concern. This workday will consist of nonnative plant removal, which allows for native trees and other plants that wildlife depends on to thrive. For this activity, we'll be hand-pulling vinca, also known as periwinkle. While this plant is typically used commercially in yards, overgrowth of this species has inhibited other native foliage and trees to grow. This activity will be mostly sitting in the shade, hand or tool pulling at a leisurely pace. We will meet at Travis County BCP’s Snowden House (https://goo.gl/maps/y5Xk3rKzT6qX9MXF7) and walk to the project site about 1 mile away.

With a record of over 40 years of service in the community, the Mexican American Council is a well-respected advocate of community issues and an agent of positive change for promoting cultural and civic engagement.

In partnership with the Everglades National Park Institute, this event will immerse the high school participants into Everglades National Park with a wet walk through a cypress dome and engaging with National Park Service staff on conservation efforts and career opportunities.   

This event, Unidos por el Medio Ambiente: Building a United Latino Conservation Community aims to bring together Latine leaders and Latine-serving conservation groups to celebrate our collective work and explore opportunities for continued collaboration, all while enjoying community and food in the greater Denver, CO area!

The LCW Photo Contest begins July 1, 2023 at 12 PM Pacific, and ends July 23, 2023 at 12 PM Pacific. Voting will occur July 24-27, 2023 and winners will be announced on July 31, 2023.

Within the last decade, what changes in diversity, equity, and inclusion in the outdoors (recreation, conservation, environmental education, environmental justice, etc.) have you observed or have personally impacted you? What are your hopes for the next ten years around conservation, outdoor recreation, and environmental education? Share your response to these questions through your photography.

Join us at Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial in celebration of Latino Conservation Week! We will have a booth set up in front of the Visitor Center where we will have engaging activities for the kids, as well as Junior Ranger books to become a Junior Ranger and get their Badge! The booth will be available to visitors all day. There will also be a bilingual guided hike from 10:00 AM- 11:00 AM CST. Anyone is welcome. Look for the interns in blue shirts, they will guide you to the Cabin site memorial and the Living Historical Farm where a replica of Lincoln's boyhood home is located. You'll get to learn about the trees and plants that grow in the area and much more!

Join Azusa Beautiful this Saturday, July 15 at 8 am for a hike/walk in our local Azusa Canyons. We'll be meeting at the Azusa Wilderness Park for a 2 mile round trip hike. During the hike you'll be able to see the beautiful San Gabriel River.  We'll be meeting at the picnic tables and heading out by 8:10 am.  There is plenty of parking. Bring your own water.  NOTE: There are no bathroom facilities.

Join us for a day at the Angeles National Forest to learn about the importance of keeping the outdoors clean. Participants will be able to learn about the life cycle of trash, the importance of composting, and its effects on wildlife. This event will allow locals to learn of ways to become involved in maintaining ecosystems in and out of the forest.
