Hike and Learn at YMCA of the Rockies and Rocky Mountain National Park

Join YMCA of the Rockies staff for a guided hike into Rocky Mountain National Park from 9am-11:30. After lunch, meet with a park ranger as they present a program about local wildlife from 1-2. Both programs will be in Spanish. Afterwards, stick around and enjoy YMCA of the Rockies activities for free, including archery, climbing wall, mini golf, and more.

With the start of the California 30x30 process this year the subject of equity and conservation has come up in several conversations. Like conservation, equity does not have on definition. Equity across the board can have many different meanings and look different in each region and community in the state of California. For this year's Latino Conservation Week, Hispanic Access Foundation will host a panel discussion with representatives from low-income, underserved, underrepresented, BIPOC communities throughout California. Having a conversation around equity and conservation and what that looks like for each region is important to highlight. We cannot have a one-size-fits-all solution. This event will be an open conversation between community members from throughout CA, local elected officials, and agency staff.

Dia de Conservación Ecologica: Stewardship Saturday

Help us kick off Latino Conservation Week with a day of preserving and protecting our native habitats. If the weather and water conditions are right, we will send out a canoe team to clean trash from the pristine water of the Armand Bayou and along the nearby banks. If a water clean up is not possible, we will plan to head into the riparian forest to perform much needed maintenance along our trails.

Ayúdanos a iniciar Latino Conservation Week con un día de conservación para preservar y proteger nuestros hábitats nativos. Si el clima permita, enviaremos un equipo de canoas para limpiar basura del agua prístina del Armand Bayou y de las orillas cercanas. Coastal Tallgrass prairie is one of the most endangered ecosystems in North America. Only 1% of wild tallgrass prairie remains and we only have 1% at ABNC. The natural systems which support this native habitat have mostly vanished and they are now people-dependent. This means that humans must actively work to preserve and protect them. When we do, all benefit - plant, animal, and human communities alike.

Family Fishing Fun

Enjoy a morning fishing at Little Seneca Lake. We’ll show you how to set up a simple bobber rig, bait your hook, and give you some tips on casting. All experience levels are welcome.

Los Angeles Youth Deep Sea Fishing

On July 17 2021

During the kick-off of Latino Conservation Week, Oasis Youth Ministry, Victorious Men, and Victorious Kids will be enjoying a day of Fishing in the port of Los Angeles, CA. We will be docking off from Newport Landing and heading out towards safe fishing grounds near the Catalina Islands.

It's a day were kids, youth and adults will learn from wildlife experts how overfishing can lead to devastating effects to our economy as well as lands. They will see the majesty of our planet from a fishermen's eyes. They will learn how fisherman are advocates for climate change in the coast of California are supporting the 30/30 initiative.

In California, the ocean supports a diversity of marine organisms and a vibrant fishing economy. However, increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere are leading to a warmer ocean and more extreme climate variations. This has implications for the location and abundance of fish and invertebrates as well as the people who depend on these species for their livelihoods and wellbeing.

On July 25th during Latino Conservation Week

Martin Martinez an Ambassador of Latino Conservation Week and Por La Creacion. Will lead a team in an out of this world conservation experience. At NASA - Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Besides launching rockets, Kennedy Space Center is filled with beautiful, diverse natural habitats. At the beginning of the space program in 1962, NASA purchased 140,000 acres, establishing it as the Launch Operations Center (LOC). In November of 1963, it was renamed to the John F. Kennedy Space Center, after the late U.S. president.

After building launch pads and facilities, a large amount of land remained untouched. In 1963, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service established the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge (NWR). Today, it focuses on protecting the 1,500 species of plants and animals within the refuge.

WHEN:

Photo Contest begins July 17, 2021, and ends July 25, 2021 at 11:59 PM Pacific. Voting will occur July 27-30, 2021 and winners will be announced on July 31, 2021.

WHO MAY PARTICIPATE:

All people are welcome to participate, regardless of race, creed, gender, sexual orientation, ability, language, and nationality.

WHAT TO ENTER:

Photos may be submitted under each of the following categories, which are drawn from subjects of special interest to Latino Outdoors’ participation in Latino Conservation Week 2021:

RETHINK OUTSIDE: Photos that help redefine what it means to be “outdoorsy”. Share portraits and photos of people engaging with the natural environment and purposeful activities which provide stress relief, promote well-being, build confidence, and offer health benefits to individuals and communities alike.
CONSERVATION CULTURA: Photos that illustrate how conservation is woven into the fabric of Latinx culture. Use photography to highlight cultural elements not found in the mainstream conservation narrative with a particular focus on the intersection of the Latinx identity and the natural environment.
THE LATINX EXPERIENCE: Photos that contribute to a better representation of all Latinx people, history, and heritage.

HOW TO ENTER:

Each participant may submit up to three photographs per category using this form. Please complete one form per photo and include a Photo Release Form. Photographs may also be submitted as Instagram posts by tagging @latinooutdoors and indicating the contest category in the caption of the IG post (Rethink Outside, Conservation Cultura, or The Latinx Experience). Photos must capture people outdoors locally, either participating in outdoor recreation or conservation efforts.

REQUIREMENTS:

Follow @LatinoConservationWeek
Use the following hashtags #LatinoConservationWeek / #LCW2021 / #LCWPhotoContest
Practice social distancing and be safe (see #RecreateResponsibly guidelines mentioned above)
Include a land acknowledgement. Put some effort into learning the history of the location you’re in. Google and the Native Lands app/website could be helpful for research.
Answer the question “What does conservation cultura mean to you?” in the photo/post caption.

Newly Renovated Visitor Center Features State-of-the-Art Educational Exhibits

Del Valle Regional Park in Livermore, CA celebrated the completion of a newly remodeled and expanded visitor center with a reopening event on May 26, 2021. The state-of-the-art exhibits include educational and bi-lingual (English and Spanish) visitor experiences, an interactive and engaging activity for all ages to learn about water management and the lake’s water levels, a live gopher snake, hands-on sand table, and more!

Latino Conservation Week Park Cleanup

Rock Creek Conservancy and Montgomery Parks invite you to celebrate Latino Conservation Week with us! Join us for a socially-distant trash cleanup, where we will focus our efforts at the Matthew Henson Trail, a Montgomery Parks site. Trash, the visible form of pollution, is a threat to our precious parklands and waterways. By reducing pollution on land, we decrease the chance of it entering our creek, rivers, and larger bodies of water through stormwater runoff.

Join CalWild and partners as we introduce Central Valley community members, with a focus on Latinx families, to camping! We'll be near and amidst our local public lands in the Sequoia National Forest from July 17-18 for an overnight camp with plant and bird identification activities planned for July 17th. Basic camping equipment will be provided (tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cooking supplies, water bottles) but attendees should bring extra clothing for both hot daytime activities and colder nighttime sleeping. Food will also be provided.In-kind donations from our sponsors Keen, Camelbak, and Juniper Ridge mean you'll be able to take home some of the equipment so you can further explore California's public lands after this trip.

LCW: Bilingual Hike at Thayer Preserve

Celebrate outdoor engagement during Latino Conservation Week 2021 with a bilingual (English and Spanish) guided hike led by Finger Lakes Land Trust staff and interpreted by Fernando de Aragon. We'll set out from South Hill Cider and explore the neighboring Thayer preserve which features a peaceful bedrock stream bed with small waterfalls and a mature forest with ample shade. After a one-mile hike, we'll return to South Hill Cider for drinks and socializing. Join us for the hike, happy hour, or both!

The Idaho Latino community is welcomed to join Vamos A Pescar – a virtual interactive webinar with fishing resources and opportunities in celebration of the 8th Annual Latino Conservation Week. The webinar, in sponsorship with Hispanic Access Foundation, Idaho Wildlife Federation, Idaho Fish & Game, and the Idaho Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, will include educational fishing opportunities and resources across the state of Idaho.

Our guest speakers will share about fishing opportunities, the licensing process, rules and regulations, and the basics of fishing for trout and bass. Additionally, the webinar will include a live raffle and giveaway of fishing gear for lucky participants. Caminata bilingüe en Sugar Pine Point SP/ Bilingual hike in Sugar Pine Point SP

El propósito de este evento está dedicado para las familias latinas en una caminata bilingüe guiada a través de un sendero popular en la tierra ancestral de Washoe, también conocida como Sugar Pine Point State Park. Los participantes pueden esperar que este sendero de 2 millas tome aproximadamente 1,5 a 2 horas con la oportunidad de darse un chapuzón en el Lago Tahoe después.

Por favor traiga zapatos para la caminata, mucha agua, bocadillos y un almuerzo, bloqueador solar, sombrero y un cambio de ropa si planea nadar en el lago después de la caminata.

The purpose of this LCW event is to engage Latinx families in a guided bilingual hike through a popular hiking trail on the ancestral home of the Washoe people, also known as Sugar Pine Point State Park. Participants can expect this easy to moderate 2.0 mile trail to take approximately1.5 to 2.0 hours with an opportunity to take a dip in Lake Tahoe afterwards.

Please bring hiking shoes, plenty of water, snacks and lunch, sunblock, hat and a change of clothes if you plan on taking a swim in the lake after the hike.

We will meet at the Sugar Pine Point parking lot at 9:15am to begin the hike at 9:30am.

This event is open to the public. There is a $10 day use site fee per vehicle. Parking lots fill up early so carpooling is highly recommended!
