Event Description:
Join us on September 21, 2024, for an inspiring and informative event at Yturria Brush, an 1,800-acre tract of pristine upland thorn scrub habitat located west of La Joya, Texas, just off Highway 83. This event, part of Latino Conservation Week, aims to bring awareness to this hidden gem and encourage the local Latino community to connect with nature in their own backyard.
Yturria Brush offers excellent wildlife watching and nature photography opportunities, with trails that can be explored on foot, providing an intimate experience with the land’s natural beauty. Despite being open to the public, Yturria Brush remains largely unknown, especially within the local Latino community, who have often felt unwelcome in similar green spaces.
During this event, we will share plans to collaborate with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) to improve Yturria Brush for future generations. Together, we aim to build much-needed infrastructure, including shaded areas, benches, picnic tables, and interpretive signage that will enhance the visitor experience and make this space more welcoming and accessible for all.
Please bring comfortable clothing, hat, sunglasses, closed toed shoes, sunscreen and anything else you need.
Directions: From US 83 and FM 907, proceed west on US 83 for 27.1 miles west to property, on right. Property is on the north side of US 83, 2 miles west of Havana.
